OK, so this year’s
Indianapolis 500 won’t be run in the month of May. For many of us, however, May
is more than just a month – it’s state of mind. So let’s still celebrate great
cars and drivers of the past anyway!

No. 5, Gary Bettenhausen 1973 Sunoco DX McLaren/Offy. After dominating the 1972
race, Gary Bettenhausen was the favorite to win the 1973 500. Instead, he had
to settle for a numbers quirk: Bettenhausen started 5th and finished
