30 Days in May: No. 1, Joe Leonard, 1972 Samsonite Special

OK, so this year’s Indianapolis 500 won’t be run in the month of May. For many of us, however, May is more state of mind than just a month. So let’s still celebrate great cars and drivers of the past anyway!

30 Days in May: No. 1 Joe Leonard, 1972 Samsonite Parnelli/Offy. An early qualifier, Leonard set one- and four-lap records that were subsequently topped. He started sixth and finished a very respectable third, helping propel Leonard to his second straight national championship. Not bad for the supposed No. 3 driver – behind Al Unser and Mario Andretti – in the first year of the “Super Team” of Vel Miletich and Parnelli Jones. #Indy500 @IMS @IMSMuseum @IndyCar
