Majeske collection Joe Leonard started sixth and finished third in the 1972 Indianapolis 500. |
30 Days in May: No. 1 Joe Leonard, 1972 Samsonite Parnelli/Offy. An early qualifier in 1972, Joe Leonard set one- and four-lap records that were subsequently topped. He started sixth and finished a very respectable third, helping propel Leonard to his second straight national championship. Not bad for the supposed No. 3 driver – behind Al Unser and Mario Andretti – in the first year of the “Super Team” of Vel Miletich and Parnelli Jones. These first-generation Parnellis, designed by Maurice Phillippe, originally had dihedral wings on each side in the middle of the car (essentially larger versions of the "wings" seen at the nose), but they were discarded when they proved unsuitable. Such was Indianapolis at that time, when teams were trying all sorts of aero-related innovations to gain even the slightest advantage. #Indy500 @IMS @IMSMuseum @IndyCar #ThisIsMay
