Welcome to our monthlong countdown celebrating notable drivers and cars from the history of the Indianapolis 500!
Majeske collection The new Parnelli cars, originally with dihedral wings, were a bit troublesome at first, but each finished in the top 10 of the 1972 Indianapolis 500. |
As an early qualifier, Joe Leonard set one- and four-lap records that were subsequently topped. He started sixth and finished a very respectable third, helping propel Leonard to his second straight national championship. Not bad for the supposed No. 3 driver – behind Al Unser and Mario Andretti – in the first year of the “Super Team” of Vel Miletich and Parnelli Jones. #Indy500 @IMS @IMSMuseum @IndyCar
