I’m trackside today for the open test ahead of this year’s Indianapolis
500. The weather seems to be improving, though it’s still pretty chilly for
late April (52 degrees) and rain is possible this afternoon.
A few impressions following a trek through Gasoline Alley this morning:
The Pennzoil car always looks great
Three-time champion Helio Castroneves will take a break from his sports
car career to try for a record-tying fourth victory in this machine. Which has
a mighty small rear wing. Shades of Tom Sneva!
McLaren garage is a popular place
Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, after an impressive Indy debut
in 2017, returns to try to add the final piece of racing’s unofficial triple
crown: An Indianapolis 500 win. If successful, he would join Graham Hill as the
only driver to win the Monaco Grand Prix, the 24 Hours of LeMans and the
Indianapolis 500.
