Just before the abbreviated test session, I caught up with Rick Mears.
Gracious as always, the four-time winner is slowing down a bit in terms of
travel with Team Penske during the season. Since his surprise retirement in
December of 1992, Mears has served as an advisor and sort of brand ambassador
for the team. Still, you can expect to see him back at the Brickyard. “If I end
up going to only one race, this is it,” he said.
It wasn't sunny, but hey, he's Rick Mears. |
Unlike when Mears drove, temperature (track and air) is a key concern. “I
remember a few times when testing there would be snowflakes as I drove across
the short chute,” he said.
